Well, here’s something a bit different. Pen makers have been casting pen blanks for years, traditionally from coloured acrylics but more recently also using images applied to tubes, then sealed in a clear resin
Our thanks to Patrick R for allowing us to share his photo, which shows a pair of Beaufort Mistral pens, made from oak, then covered in gold leaf.
His method was to turn the oak to a size smaller than the bushes, apply the gold leaf – one of them here is yellow gold, the other is white gold, then cast them in clear resin which he then re-turned and finished to size. The result is a gold leaf pen which is fully encased and protected, that also shows the grain of the wood underneath.
We think they look great, but even if the finished result isn’t your cup of tea, you have to admit it’s an innovative idea. What clever customers we have!

The boss is a pen maker, and he is frequently asked what finishes he recommends for our pen kits, the answer to which will of course depend on what the pen is being made from in the first place. However, in his opinion, as far as wood is concerned you are never going to achieve a good, strong, lasting finish from wax products alone, and CA, which was never intended as a finish, simply serves to encase the wood in a plastic shell, thereby losing touch with the wood itself.
It’s a personal choice of course, but for most woods he prefers liquid melamine, and Phil has finally found time to write down his method.
Click the link below to see Phil’s tutorial on achieving success with melamine as a pen finish. It’s in PDF format and should just open on your screen.

Our range of spare tubes for pen kits continues to grow, with tubes now available for around 30 different kits, including the Pristina and Roman Harvest.
Tubes for the Zeta are also now back in stock and we also have a selection of pre-coloured black and white tubes for those that prefer not to have to bother with the spray can, plus 7mm and 27/64 tubes in 10 inch lengths for those who want to cut their own or need bespoke lengths for special projects.
We realise that tubes for specific kits are available from the manufactures themselves, but this is simply another service we offer. If you find youselves in need of some tubes for whatever reason, there’s a good chance you’ll find what you need here.

Spare tubes from Beaufort Ink are available for many pen kits
After launching our new website at the end of November last year, and receiving overwhelmingly glowing reviews from all quarters for our pen refills , we enter 2015 in the knowledge that our claims regarding quality and value for money are entirely backed up by those who have had the opportunity to try them out for themselves. From the outset, our aim has been to produce pen refills of the very highest quality at the best possible price, in order to provide a real alternative to the poor refills supplied with pen kits and to refills available from suppliers elsewhere.
Beaufort Ink’s philosophy has, and always will be that there is no merit whatsoever in selling the same thing as everyone else or in copying anyone else, which only serves to dilute the marketplace to the ultimate detriment of everyone. Throughout the coming year, we hope to build on our pen refill core products, by introducing other items which we feel will be of benefit to pen makers and pen owners, that are either hard to find, hard to get in modest quantities, or which can be improved upon through better design, material or manufacturing.
There will be more news on further developments at Beaufort Ink as they happen.
In the meantime, a happy New Year to one and all.
